Edward John Woodcroft and Ada Glennan
Edward [Ted] John Woodcroft was born 28th October,
1886 at Bunyan outside of Cooma. His parents were
John Woodcroft and Agnes Engelmann . Family
recollections state that Ted was a large well built man
who stood 6' 6" tall and weighed about 20 stone. At one
time Edward held the record for carrying a green sleeper
the length of Bungalow railway platform.
Ada Glennan was born 25th May 1883 at Cooma Creek to
Laurence Glennan and Mary Jane Hughes. Family
recollections tell that Ada was a fine boned woman who
stood about 4' 11"
Marriage: In 1906 Edward and Ada married in Cooma.
On his marriage certificate his name is shown as John.
Edward and Ada had ten children:
Annie Irene "Irene" Woodcroft; born 1907, Cooma [ref
2659] Married Raymond D STREET in 1927, Grafton.
Ray was a train driver.
Edward John Lawrence "Jack" Woodcroft; born 29th
October 1908 in Narrandera, NSW [Ref 38300]. He
married Christina "Chrissie" Mary O’Reilly in 1941 at
Grenfell. He served as a Private in 37/52 Battalion of the
AIF in WWII. Later Jack worked at a paper mill. Died in
Traralgon in 1970
William Henry Peter "Bill" Woodcroft; born 1910
Cooma, [Ref 13973] Married Mary Irene Onions 1934,
Grafton. William was a bricklayer. Died 29th August 1964.
Owen Joseph Leo Malachy "Leo" Woodcroft; born 12th
October 1911 or 12 [WW2 papers], Cooma [Ref 39203]
Married Anastacia "Ann" Allen in Goulburn in 1951 [ref
12915/1951] --- Leo Joseph Malachi Woodcroft born 16th
October 1912 per his enlistment papers, in Cooma,
served as a Gunner in the 3rd Anti Tank Unit in WWII.
Later Leo was employed in the railways. Leo died 2nd
May 1978 and is buried in the Nambucca heads
cemetery, Roman Catholic section Row CD Plot 9A
Agnes Mary Ada Loreena "Molly" Woodcroft; born 1913
Goulburn [Ref 13973]. Married Cecil Raymond Fanning
1936, Burwood. Agnes died 1973 in Grafton.
Veronica Kathleen "Kitty" Woodcroft; born 8th July
1915 Canterbury [Ref 30071] Married Thomas Lester
PUGH 23rd December, 1935, Grafton. [ref 2942/1936]
Reginald Jeffrey Augustine "Reg" Woodcroft; Born
August 1919 married Joan Agnes Predergast, 1944
Sydney ??? Reg was an Ambulance driver. Died February
2000 aged 80.
Gordon Francis Don Woodcroft born about 1923;
Married 1) Lorraine Jones in 1946 in Lismore [ref
5331/1947] - divorced 1953 & 2) Bette Adelaide
Madewick in 1954 [ref 14537/1954] in Sydney. Gordon
was a cattle buyer and later a publican at Bothwell. He
died in 1989.
Roger Kevin Keith "Keith" Woodcroft; born 19th June
1924, Grafton NSW. He served as a Leading Aircraftman
in the RAAF in WWII. Married Josephine Garland Doris
"Dot" STUBBINGS, at Waverley in 1947 [ref
10489/1947]. Later Keith was a bricklayer.
Roy Allan Woodcroft, born 14th March 1929 [WW2
papers] or 1930, Grafton.
The 1909 electoral roll for Bunyan lists Edward as a
labourer. According to family recollection Edward served
as a prison guard at possibly Goulburn Gaol. He is also
know to have gone fruit picking with his son Jack.
Eventually he joined the railways as a ganger and the
family settled in Fitzroy Street,Grafton. Later they lived
on a farm.
Probationary Constable: Edward is recorded in the police
gazette as being Probationary Constable no 23 on 1st
May 1915. He resigned as Probationary Constable on
31st October 1915.
Bankruptcy: Edward is recorded in the newspapers in
relation to voluntary sequestration in November 1916 and
in the bankruptcy court in June 1943.

occupation [he died in 1948 but had not been removed
from the electoral roll]
1954 Ada is residing 31 Milton Street, Grafton
Edward died at the Grafton Base Hospital on 17th July
1948. The cause of death is given as carcinoma of the
stomach which he had suffered from for over a year. The
informant was son R. J Woodcroft. Edward is buried in
the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Grafton on 18th July
1948 He was 61 years old. [ref 18829]
Ada died in hospital at Sydney on 24th February, 1958
[ref 3373] after a gallstone operation. She is buried in
Grafton with Edward.
