Richard Massey Williams was born about 1793 at Llanfinengel, Wales. Possible parents are
William Williams and Elizabeth Williams. Between 1820 and 1822 Richard was a farmer at
Tyn Llan. By 1825 Richard was farming at Garnedd Goch, Penmynydd. [click for photos]
Margaret Roberts was born about 1795 Llanynghenedl, [near Holyhead] Wales according to
the 1851 census.
Marriage: Richard Williams of Penmynnydd married Margaret Roberts of Llanynghenedl by
licence with consent of parents on 19th September 1817 by John Ellis, curate in the parish
of Llanynghenedl. The witnesses were Robert Lewis and William Roberts. The consent of
parents would indicate that one or both of the parties was under 21 years of age.

Elizabeth Williams born about 1820 at Llanddyfnan, Wales. Christened 3rd February 1820
at Calvanistic Methodist Chapel, Talwrn, Llanddyfnan, abode Tyn Llan, father's occupation,
farmer. Married Robert Hughes prior to 1846. They resided at Holyhead. The University of
Wales, Bangor has in it's archives the House Day Book of Elizabeth Williams of Garnedd
Goch for the years 1838-1842.
Dorothy Massey Williams born 1822 Llanddyfnan, Wales. Baptised 4th March 1822,
Calvanistic Methodist Chapel Talwrn, Llanddyfnan, abode Tyn Llan, father's occupation,
farmer. Dorothy was a dressmaker at the time of the 1851 census. She travelled to Australia
in 1852 with siblings Robert and Jane. Married Alfred Joseph Simmons in Melbourne
Australia in 1855. They had one son, Richard Alfred Simmons born Melbourne 1858. Alfred
was a hotel manager. Dorothy aged 52 died Sept Q 1874 in Bangor District Vol 11b Page 334.
William Williams baptised 11th November 1824 at Llanfihangel Ysceifiog, Anglesey, Wales.
Father a farmer at Carnan Goch Penmynydd William was a farmer and lived at Garnedd Goch
after his parents retired. Married Ann?
Jane Massey Williams: baptised 14th September 1827 at Llanfihangel Ysceifiog, Anglesey,
Wales. Father a farmer at Cynan Goch. Jane came to Australia aboard the Serampore in
1852 with Robert and Dorothy.
John M[Massey?] Williams baptised 20th June 1830 Penrhosslligwy. Father a farmer of
Lligwy. John died 20th April 1860 and was buried on 25th April St Gredifael's Church
Penmynydd. Burial register reads of Llanfair, late of Garnan Goch aged 29
Robert Massey Williams born 1834 Penrhoslligwy, Wales. Baptised 2nd December 1838
aged 5 1/2 at Llanfihangel Ysceifiog, Anglesey, Wales. Robert came to Australia in 1852
aboard the 'Serampore'. In April of 1879, sister Kezia placed an advertisement in the
Melbourne Argus, requesting Robert to contact her at 263 Camberwell New Road, London as
he had money due to him from his late Aunt Jane's estate. Sister Hannah Bartlett also
placed an advertisement in The Queenslander on 10th May 1879. Robert died on 22nd
December 1888 at the Old Palmerston Hospital in the Northern Territory. He is buried in the
Palmerston Cemetery plot 50. His death is registered in South Australian [ref bk 177, pg 19]
and is also mentioned in the South Australian Government Gazette. He is described as being
a resident of Daly Waters [in the NT] having arrived in the Northern Territory from the
Kimberley Gold Fields. The North Australian [Darwin] newspaper dated 29th December 1888
reported: Two deaths occurred at the Palmerston Hospital on Saturday morning last In one
instance the deceased was named Robert Williams, and he had been employed at the Daly
River Copper Mine until dysentery attacked him and obliged him to come on to Palmerston for
medical attendance. He had been in the Hospital about 38 hours when his death occurred.
Hannah Williams born 1836, Penrhoslligwy, Wales baptised 2nd May 1836 Penrhoslligwy.
Father a farmer of Lligwy. Came to Australia about 1860.- My Great x 2 Grandmother
Kezia Margaret Williams baptised 2nd December 1838 at Llanfihangel Ysceifiog, Anglesey,
Wales. Married Frederick [Fred] White, Sept Q 1866, Bangor District. Frederick was a timber
merchant born 1844, Gravesend, Kent. In 1871 Fred White is residing at Faversham Kent,
whilst Kezia is visiting her family in Surrey. In 1881 the family is together at Camberwell.
Kezia died June Q 1883 aged 44 in Dist Camberwell [vol 1d Page 450]
Emma Williams baptised 31st January 1841 Penmynydd, Wales. Father a farmer of Carnan
Goch. Emma Williams aged 17 of Garnedd Goch Penmyniydd died and was buried on 28th
October 1858 at Pentraeth [north of Penmynydd]
The 1841 census shows the whole family residing at Garnedd Goch in Penmynydd, along
with four servants .Richard aged 45, a farmer, Margaret aged 40, daughters Elizabeth aged
20, Dorothy 18, Jane 14, Hannah 5, Kezia 2 and Emma 5months and sons William 15, John
10, Robert 7. Also listed are Elizabeth Williams aged 30 and Jane Williams aged 25 both
'independent', possibly Richard's sisters.
The 1851 census shows the family residing at 'Garnedd Goch' Penmynydd - a farm of 210
acres employing 6 labourers. Son William aged 26 is listed as the head of household. Father
Richard 58 is listed as an agricultural labourer along with other son Robert 17. Margaret
aged 56, Hannah 15, Kezia 12 and Emma 9 are also in the household. Daughters Elizabeth
and Dorothy are residing in Holyhead with Elizabeth's husband Robert Hughes.
The 1861 census shows Richard 68 and Margaret 66 residing at No 7 Bryn Salun? Llan
Fairpwllgwyngyll in the sub district of Beamaris, district of Bangor. Richard is a retired
farmer. His place of birth is shown as Penmynydd and Margaret's is recorded as
Denbighshire, which differs from her previous birthplace. Also in the household is
grandaughter Elizabeth Hughes aged 7 born Holyhead, Anglesey [daughter of Elizabeth nee
Williams and Robert Hughes]. Son William is still residing at the farm in Penmynydd with
The 1871 census shows Margaret, a widow, residing in the home of Alfred J Simmons and
wife Dorothy [nee Williams] She is listed as 'Grandmother' . Also in the household are
Richard Simmons born Melbourne, Australia. Margaret's daughter Kezia White [nee
Williams] is also there along with her daughter Emma aged 4. The address is No 8 Grove
Place, Camberwell, St Giles, Surrey, England.
