Mary Louisa Fitzball Watkinson
Mary Louisa Fitzball WATKINSON, born December Q 1854, Spalding Vol 7a Page 282,
daughter of Henry Watkinson and Jane Hewitt. In 1871 Mary was a student at the Boarding
School in London Street.
First Marriage: Mary aged 27 married Frank Rhodes aged 58, on 16th March 1881 at New
Sleaford. It was Frank's first marriage.
Frank [Francis] RHODES, was a retired chemist from Middlesex, 31 years her senior. Frank
was born on 25th of July 1823 son of John Rhodes and Caroline Blurden Barlow and
baptised 7th September 1825 at Old Church, Saint Pancras, London, England.
Lincolnshire Chronicles dated 22nd March 1881 reports:
The 1841 census shows Frank as an apprentice chemist residing in the home of George
Crook[?] in Great Marylbone Street Cavendish Square Middlesex.
The 1851 census shows Frank, a chemist and druggist residing in London Street, Hampton
The 1861 census shows Frank, a pharmaceutical chemist residing at Market Place, Spalding.
The 1871 census shows Frank a pharmaceutical chemist living in Market Place, Spalding.
The 1881 census, Frank and Mary are living at Castle Villas Spalding with servant Frances
By 1891 the family is living at 83 London Road, Spalding.

Death: Frank Rhodes died March q 1900, Spalding. The Grantham Journal dated 17th
February 1900 reported:
Second Marriage: Mary aged 47 married James Alfred Claude Burgess aged 32 in Dec Q
1901 at Spalding. James was an estate carpenter [nephew living with the Smith family] a few
houses down from the widowed Mary in the 1901 census. His parents were John Burgess
and Sarah Smith. James was born in 1869 at Burnt Fen, Mildenhall, Suffolk. Lincolnshire
Chronicle dated 18th October 1901 reported:
At the time of the 1911 census, James, a grain miller and Mary who has her own income
from property, are residing at 193 Windover Road Spalding, a residence with 7 rooms. Son
Herbert Rhodes is also in residence along with a servant, Catherine Reddin.
