Peter Tune and Mabel Smith
My Great Great Great Grandparents

Peter Tune was baptised 25th September 1805 [d] in, Belton  Lincolnshire, son of  Edward
Tune and Elizabeth Sayles

Mabel Smith baptised 7th February 1802, Crowle Lincolnshire, daughter of Thomas and
Ann Smith [d].

Peter and Mabel had their first child, Thomas before they were married. He was born about
two weeks before Peter's father, Edward died. Five months later Peter and Mabel married.
One can only wonder if perhaps Peter's father was not in favour of the match.

Marriage: Peter and Mabel married on 15th September, 1833 at St Oswalds Crowle.
Witnesses were William Bellamy and Thomas Foster Autey.
 Peter inherited a grocery
business from his father. He also held a 40 acre farm on Fieldside, Crowle and owned a Brick
and Tile works.

Peter and Mabel had the following children:

Thomas Smith Tune: born 3rd, March 1833, Crowle, Lincolnshire, five months before
parents Peter and Mabel married [a]  He was baptised on 26th June 1833 at St Oswalds,
Crowle. Mother Mabel was a Manteau Maker. There is no mention of his father and the
baptismal entry is recorded with the word, bastard.

Tune: Sarah was christened Crowle, 26th June 1836 [c] Sarah married John Frost Sherman
[son of John Sherman, widower and  Sarah Frost?] on 1st February 1859 in Surrey,
England.[d]  John Sherman was a miller. The family resided at Heath Mill, Pirbright, Surrey.
Their Children include:
John Peter, christened 6th April, 1860, Shere, Surrey . Died 1875 ?
Isabella Mabel christened 23rd September 1870 Pirbright Near Guilford, Surrey

The 1841 census shows Peter and Mabel living in Crowle. Peter is a grocer. Also in the
household are children Thomas, Sarah, Ann and baby George. Elizabeth Tune [Peter's
mother] aged 75 and Thomas Smith [Mabel's father] aged 75 , Independent, are also in the

The 1851 census shows Peter and Mabel still living in Crowle with their children. Peter is a

By 1861 Peter is listed as a farmer of 40 acres. He and Mabel along with sons Thomas and
George are still living in Crowle.


Peter died on 17th August 1869. Cause of death was by hanging. A note in the cemetery
records states he was of unsound mind.
Lincolnshire Chronicle dated 27th August 1869 reported:
Suicide: Mr Peter Tune,
proprietor of the Isle of Axholme and marshland Brewery hung himself in one of the
outbuildings during the temporary absence of his family on the afternoon of the 17th
instant. He had been for some time in a delicate state of health. Mr Iveson, deputy
coroner held and inquest over the body on 19th instant when a verdict of 'temporary
insanity' was returned.

Mabel was living with her son Thomas at the time of the 1871 and 1881 British census. [b]
Mabel died on 21st October 1890 aged 88
