Mary Houlihan and William Stirling
Mary J [Mary May?] Houlihan was born 1865 and baptised on 12th May 1865 at Fedamore
Roman Catholic Church, Limerick, in Ireland, [as Maram Holohan, father Guilehum, mother
Alice Dooly] daughter of
William Houlihan and Alice Maragret Dooley   Witnesses to the
Baptism were
Mary Houlihan [her aunt] and Michael [ML] Ryan. Mary aged 7 travelled to
Australia with her mother aboard the
City of Agra in 1872.

William Stirling/Andrew William Stirling was born in 1857, son of Andrew W Stirling and
Janet/Jenet/Jeanette Horn at Chippendale.

Marriage: Mary Woolighan* married William Sterling* in Sydney in 1882 [ref 1075/1882].

William Stirling was a deep sea diver working with the department of Harbours and Rivers in
Sydney Harbour. Their address in 1917 was 'Talotta' 10 Cammeray Ave, North Sydney.

John Arthur [Jack] STIRLING born Sydney 1899 ref 18302/1899 . Died 17th July 1918 at
Villers Bretonneaux, France in WW1 Sydney Morning Herald dated 29th July 1918 reported:
STIRLING.-Died of wounds in France, July 17, 1918, Sapper John Arthur, dearly-loved
youngest son of Mary Stirling. Talotta, Cammoray Aveuue, North Sydney aged l8 years and
11 months. - see

William Stirling
died in 1905 [according to son John's enlistment papers]. There are two
records for William Stirlings who died in 1905 1) William son of Andrew W and Janet  
3748/1905 which appears to be our William, and 2) William aged 46 7478/1905. Both died
in Sydney. The following notice appeared in the SMH dated 25th April 1905 and looks a
likely match.
STIRLING -The Relatives and Friends of the deceased WILLIAM STIRLING, late Diver, Harbour
and Rivers Department, are respectfully invited to attend his funeral to leave his late
residence, 10 Mount street. Pyrmont, THIS AFTERNOON, at 1.30, for the Necropolis [Rookwood
Cemetery]. [NOTE: There is an autopsy for the second William Stirling which states he was a
seaman who died in Darlinghurst gaol.]

Mary Stirling died at North Sydney late in 1937 [ref 2735/1938] SMH notice reads as
STIRLING-January 1 1938 at a private hospital North Sydney Mary widow of the late Andrew
William Stirling and loving mother of William, Mary, Alexander, Janet, Margaret, Robert,
Sidney, John, Helen and Flora aged 71 years. Interred Northern Suburbs Cemetery January 1

Note: The SMH of 1884 has several reports of a Mr William Stirling and wife suing the
government for damages. This is another couple, William and Penelope Stirling.
