Henry Pointon and Catherine Gavin
Great Grandparents

Henry Francis Pointon/Poynton was born 20th May
1854 at 'Bengeo', Westbury, Tasmania, and baptised
26th October, 1855. Henry was the son of convicts
Frederick Pointon and Louisa Wright. Henry signed
his marriage certificate with an X indicating he could
not read or write. At the time his occupation was stated
as general servant. Henry died 4th June 1900, East
Meander from pneumonia.

Catherine Agnes Gavin was born 5th August, 1855,
Morven, daughter of
John Gavin and Mary Murphy.
Catherine could read and write. At the time of her
marriage, Catherine was a general servant.

Marriage: Henry Poynton, a bachelor aged 23 married
Catherine Agnes Gavin, a spinster aged 21 on 8th May,
1878 in the Catholic Church, at Deloraine, Tasmania
[Reg No.68, Year 1878. RGD Number 37]  Both Henry
and Catherine were general servants. Henry made his
mark and Cahtherine signed her name. The witnesses
were John Dalton and Mary Ann Coghlan. E F Walsh
was the minister.

Father Henry, a labourer of Calstock. [Ref 1879 734
33] She married
John Joseph [Jack] Donahue, 30th
November 1904. They lived in Deloraine. She made
younger brother James' first suit when she was 14
years old.  

John Edward Pointon born 24th May, 1881,
Deloraine Tasmania.[Ref 1881 387 33] Married
Mary
Agnes Donahue
on 23rd May 1904. He died on 3rd
June, 1935

William Thomas Pointon, born 20th February, 1883,
Deloraine Tasmania. Father Henry a labourer of East
Meander. [ref 1883/356/33] Married
Ethel Jane
Walsh
, in 1907. William died on 11th May 1960.

Maria Jane Pointon born 11th January 1885,
Deloraine Tasmania [Ref 1885 1064 33]. Maria Jane
Pointon, labourers child. died 2nd November, 1885
[Ref 1885/598/35] aged 9 months. Cause of death
congestion of the lungs. Informant was Henry Pointon,
father, of Catstock.

Sylvester Henry/Henry Sylvester Pointon born 16th
June, 1888, Deloraine.[Ref 1888/1148/33] Married
Ettie [unknown] according to oral recollection
[unconfirmed - this may refer to brother William above
who married Ethel] Died 14th May, 1964, Tasmania.

Elsie May Pointon, born 14th December, 1890,
Deloraine.[Ref 1891 1084 33] Never married. According
to family recollection, Elsie was a barmaid by trade.
Died 9th December, 1967, Deloraine, Tas.

James Francis Pointon/Poynton born 28th May,
1893, Deloraine, Tasmania. Father Henry, a farmer of
East Meander, was the informant and made his mark. -
My Grandfather

Death: Henry died 4th June 1900, East Meander from
pneumonia.

Second Marriage: Catherine married for the second
time on 13th June 1906 to
Michael [Joseph] Ferns at
Deloraine.

Death: Catherine died 3rd, January 1935, at Deloraine.
The Examiner Launceston dated 7th January 1935 carried the following obituary.

NORTHERN DELORAINE LATE MRS. CATHERINE FERNES The funeral of the late Mrs.
Catherine Fernes took place at Deloraine on Sunday afternoon, Rev. Father T.Monaghan
officiating at the church  and graveside. The late Mrs. Fernes who passed away on
Thursday night at the age of 79 years, was the eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Gavin [
Note -this is incorrect, her father was John], Golden Valley, and had lived
her whole life in the district. She married the late Mr. Henry Poynton, who died in 1900,
and later married the late Mr. M. Fernes.She leaves four sons--Messrs. John. Poynton
(Jacky's Marsh), William Poynton (Selwyne, Victoria), Henry Poynton (Reedy Marsh), and
James Poynton (Croydon, Victoria). There are two daughters- Mrs. J. Donohue
(Kensington, Victoria) and Miss E. Poynton (Deloraine). Chief mourners were .Mr.Henry
Poynton, Mrs. J; Donohue, and Miss Poynton, Messrs. Jas and Thos. Gavin (brothers), and
Leo Poynton (grandson). Carriers were Messrs. W., R., and W. Dixon, and D. Donohue.
There were many floral tributes.
