Albert Joseph Houlihan and Edith May Hayes
Albert Joseph Hoolaghan*  born 30th May 1873 at Booyamurra, in the district of  
Coonabarabran,  son of
William Houlihan and Alice Dowling  Present at the birth was Mrs
Kenny. Father William was the informant and he made his mark rather than sign.

Edith May [Maud aka Dot] Hayes was born at Bega in 1886, daughter of Michael Hayes and
Mary Collins granddaughter of Mortimer Hayes.

Marriage: Albert married Edith May [Maud] Hayes in 1912 at Canterbury [ Houlihan].

Occupation: My Grandmother described her Uncle Albert's occupation as being a 'Rock
Chopper', that is, he made headstones. The 1903 electoral roll lists Albert's occupation as

Albert and Edith had two children. They appear to have been born out of wedlock and were
later legitimised under the Legitimation Act of 1902:

Arthur Allan/Allan Arthur] , born 24th May 1909 at South Sydney Womens Hospital,
Stanley Street Newtown - ref 28026/1909 as Arthur Allan Hayes, [illegitimate] Mother Maude
Edith Hayes, spinster. Present at birth were Nellie Spencer and Margaret Hutchison.  Arthur
was also registered as  Arthur A Houlihan 1968/1909.  Died 1969, Sydney [ref 2377] Married
Doris E Hill 1934. The 1930 Electoral Roll shows Arthur residing at 6 Browns Ave,
Newington. He is a clerk. The 1936 Electoral roll shows Arthur and Doris residing at 20 Ethel
Street, Randwick East. Arthur is a clerk. Arthur [as Allan Arthur] served in WW2 as a leading

Alice Mary Hayes born 1911, Paddington Ref 43992 , mother Edith.  Later registered as
Alice M Houlihan ref 285/1920 Edith and Albert.  In 1936 Alice is residing at 84 Crystal
Street, Petersham, the home of her cousin Jean Hickson [nee Thomas] and husband Ernest
Hickson. Married
Wilfred James Norgate, Petersham 1938. Wilfred was a painter, born
Williamstown Victoria in 1912. Wilfred served in WW2, The 1936 Electoral roll shows Wilfred
residing at 6 Balmain Road Leichhardt with Millicent Jane Norgate.


Edith Maud Houlihan,
aged 37 died on 18th October 1923 in  Sydney [ref 15965/1923].
Coroners report states her cause of death was from injuries received from being run over by a
motor car. She is buried in the Catholic section of the Rookwood Cemetery.  Sydney Morning
Herald dated Friday 19th October 1923 reported:
Edith Maud Hourigan [sic], 35 years of age, a married woman, was struck by a City
Council motor lorry whilst crossing Railway-square at 7.30 a.m. yesterday, and killed

Sydney Morning Hereald dated 19th October 1923 :
HOULIHAN.- October 18, 1923, at 34 Castlereagh street, Redfern, Dot, beloved wife of
Albert Houlihan.

Albert J Houlihan, aged 51 died 2nd October 1924 in Redfern [ref 16361] and is buried with
Edith at Rookwood in the Catholic Section M2 Area 2 plot 1191 - photos below
