Susan HICKSON [born about 1831] aged 22 arrived in Sydney aboard the 'Australia' in 1853. According to her shipping information Susan was a domestic servant of the church of England faith. She could read and write. She had a cousin Mrs Wilcox residing in Sydney. Also on board were Margaret and Ellen Daly of Killorglin, daughters of Ellen Hickson and Charles Daly, who were Catholic. Paid the immigration deposit for John Hulme/Hume aged 24 on 11th May 1854. Susan married John Hume in Sydney in 1855 [ref V18551562 73B/1855 - indexed as Susanna]
Mary HICKSON [born about 1835] aged 20 arrived aboard the Hilton in Sydney in 1855 with sister Ellen [see below] Mary was a house servant. According to her shipping information she was of the church of England faith. She could read and write. Her sister Susan is recorded as living in Sydney. Married James Riley in Redfern in 1857 [ref 1101/1857] according to the rites of R.C. Church. Died Western Australia
Ellen HICKSON [born about 1840] aged 15 arrived aboard the Hilton in Sydney in 1855 with sister Mary [above]. According to her shipping information she was a house servant of the church of England faith. SAhe could read and write. Ellen married Joseph Reeve in 1865 in Sydney [ref: 196/1865 NOTE: Groom indexed as Reesse] They moved to Victoria in 1866. Died 7 Jan 1950 Langston St Northcote, buried Melbourne General Cemetery. Catherine HICKSON [born about 1844] aged 19 arrived in Sydney aboard the Severn in 1863 with brother George -see below. According to her shipping record she was a house servant of the church of England faith. She could read and write. Of interest is the fact that her father is recorded as living whereas brother George's details record his father as dead. Married Hugh Breckenridge 26th August 1875 at Glebe [ref 1324/1875] Died 19 Feb 1917 Neutral Bay, buried Gore Hill cemetery.
George HICKSON aka George Carter Hickson [born about 1845] aged 18 arrived in Sydney aboard the Severn in 1863 with sister Catherine above. According to his shipping records George was a nailer. He was of the church of England faith and could read and write. Both is parents are recorded as being dead at this time. Carter was adopted as a middle name to recognise the Carter of his mother’s name. Married Agnes Harper in Sydney in 1870 [ref 1070/1870]

Father a provisions dealer. 1870 US Census: The family is recorded under the surname HICKS: The family is residing south of Fourth Street, Boston. William age 38 gives his occupation as 'drives wagon'. Mary is aged 36. Children are Richard aged 10 born Ireland, Susan aged 8, Mary aged 7, George aged 4 and William aged 1 all born Massachusetts. At that time he was living in Waltham [Boston Massachusetts] and gives his date of birth as 8th April 1832.[Ancestry] Immigration to Australia: William left the USA some time after the birth of Sarah in 1875 and must have returned briefly to the UK before coming to Australia as an assisted immigrant in 1878. John C[hristopher] Hickson: Arrived in Melbourne aboard the Caduceus in 1870. Married Martha Watts in Sydney in 1872 [ref 70/1872] Travelled to Australia in NSW in 1911 aboard the Osterley. Wife Martha had died on board during the voyage. SMH dated 1st August 1911 reported: HICKSON.—July 15 on board RMS Osterley, at sea Martha, the dearly loved wife of John Christopher Hickson of Manly and Burwood, leaving a family of five daughters, and five sons to mourn their irreparable loss He married Alice Elizabeth Hammett 23 Nov 1911 Balmain, she died 15 Aug 1925 Manly. He married Isobel Hewitt Parkinson, (born June 1870, Stepney), 24 July 1926 in Kensington England. She died 1951 Manly. John died 15th July 1945 at Manly NSW [ref18030]
