James Gregory;  a possible birth on 26th February 1789 and baptism on 18th October 1789
at St Dunstan Stepney, son of
John Gregory [a shipwright of Poplar] and Elizabeth.  James
was a butcher [a&d] James had died by 1843 as per daughter Elizabeth's marriage cert. A
possible apprenticeship for James is to Thomas T Price, citizen and butcher of London on
11th November 1803.

Mary Ann Maria Wilson was born in Poplar Middlesex about 1792 in Middlesex.[c] daughter
of
Alexander Wilson and Mary

Marriage: James Gregory and Mary Anne [sic] Maria Wilson were married by banns on 24th
February 1813 at St George Bloomsbury, Middlesex. Both were said to be of the parish.
Witnesses were Charles Augustus Wilson, [Mary's brother] and Sally Wilson [first wife of
Mary's brother Alexander] [f]

Their Children were :

Sarah Elizabeth Gregory:
born 18th December 1813 baptised 23rd January 1814, Saints
Dunstan and All Saints, Poplar. Married
James Murdock Gibbons, Dec Q 1837 at Poplar
registration District. James, a mast maker and Sarah were residing in Poplar in the 1851
census.

Mary Ann Gregory born 28th September 1815 baptised 28th September 1817, All Saints
Poplar. Married
John Hutchison, June Q 1851 Stepney [e]

Elizabeth Esther Gregory born 4th September 1817, baptised 28th September 1817 All
Saints Poplar. Married
John Thomas Kettle, 27th February 1843.

Jane Ann Gregory born 16th July 1819, Baptised 5 November 1819 All Saints Poplar [father
recorded as 'William' in parish register, scan sighted]

James Alexander Gregory born 1st November 1821 but was not baptised until 23rd August
1837 at All Saints Poplar. James went to India. Marriage: James Alexander Gregory aged 28,
a confectioner, married
Jemima Eliza Lehar, aged 22, a native born woman on 31st August
1852 at St James Calcutta.1880: James Alexander Gregory of Calcutta manager of the Great
Eastern Hotel Co. as per London Gazette supplement dated 25th Feb 1880 - National Bank
of India Limited.  'Eliza Gregory' wife of James Alexander Gregory died 4th May and buried
5th May 1890 at Calcutta. James had returned to England by 1891 at which time he is
described in the census as a widow, retired hotel owner [as Gregorie] Residing with married
niece
Jemima Eliza Humphries nee Olyett. Died 1895


Emily Caroline Gregory born 25th April, baptised 19 May 1824 St Alphage, Greenwich,
Kent. Parents residences was 'East Lane'.  Married
Robert William Olyett [f] on 16th
January 1847 at St Mary Stratford, Bow

Maria Eliza Gregory born 6th August 1827, baptised 31st August 1827 All Saints Poplar.

Death:  James Gregory died before the 1841 census. When his father in law Alexander
Wilson makes a will in 1827, James is living.

Census:

1841:
Mary aged 50, a laundress, together with children Maria aged 14 and James jnr aged
19, a labourer, are residing at 33 Cotton Street, Poplar, the home of her brother Thomas
Hart Wilson aged 44, of independent means.  There is no sign of James snr. Daughter Jane
Ann is residing with Alexander and Elizabeth Wilson in High Street. Daughter Emily appears
to be a servant residing at Montague Place, Poplar in the home of Henry Benson Cox, a
mariner and his family.

1851: Mary, a widow aged 59 [no occupation listed] is residing at 7 Cotton Street, Poplar
with daughter Mary Ann and sister Hester [undecipherable] aged 41, born Poplar. On either
side are more possible relatives. No 6 Robert Wilson aged 37 Engineer born Scotland and
wife Jane E aged 27 born Dorset, with children Jane aged 3 and Robert aged 1. At number 8
is brother William Wilson aged 66 a boat builder born Poplar and brother Henry Wilson aged
52, deaf and dumb.

1861: Mary a widow aged 69 [supported by son] is residing at 5 Manor street, Poplar with
brother Henry Wilson aged 64, deaf and dumb [a proprietor of Houses] and daughter Mary
Ann Hutchinson a widow with no occupation.

1871: Mary, a aged 78 is still living at 5 Manor Street, with brother Henry Wilson, daughter
Mary A Hutchison and grand daughter Mary, a governess.

Death: According to her Administration files Mary Ann Maria Gregory died 12th September
1873 at 5 Manor Street, Poplar. Her personal estate was valued at 464 pounds, 13s 3
1/2pence. Administration of her estate was granted to widowed daughter Sarah Elizabeth
Gibbons on 15th April 1882 [did something hold up the settlement?] However I have been
unable to find a corresponding death record for this date. A possible death registration is

Private Family Grave: The Register of Private Graves for the Tower Hamlets Cemetery
[Ancestry] records that on 5th September 1873, James Alexander Gregory of 7 Manor Street
Poplar purchased plot 6441. The following relatives are buried there:

Henry E Wilson 15th April 1880
Sarah E Gibbons aged 78 13th December 1890
James A Gregory aged 74 17th September 1895
