Connell Family - of Caherconlish and Ballybricken, Limerick -
The Connell family of Limerick are connected to my Houlihan and Dooley families in several ways although I have found no direct familial connection.
Marriage: Patrick Connell of Inch and St Lawrence married 'Bridget' [sic] Bresnahan on 26th February 1829 at Rockstown [Ballybricken parish]. Witnesses were Thomas James McGrath and James Bresnahan.
The Children of Patrick Connell and Elizabeth/Eliza Bresnahan/Bresnan: [NOTE the baptism and marriage registers for Caherconlish are not yet available prior to 1841]
Catherine Connell: Born about 1839 to parents Patrick and Eliza. Catherine travelled to Australia in 1863 aboard the John Temperley with Ellen Houlihan. Catherine was a servant from Ballybricken [Co Clare!!] She was Roman Catholic and she could read and write. Catherine would later pay the deposit for siblings James and Margaret Connell.
James Connell/O'Connell was born between 1836 and 1840 to parents Patrick and Eliza. In 1864 he is one of the witnesses when William Houlihan marries Alice Dooley. In October 1864 he travelled to Australia with William Houlihan aboard the St Hilda. At the time he gives his native place as Ballybricken. His occupation is recorded as 'labourer'. He was Roman Catholic and could read and write. His parents are recorded as living at Ballybricken. Also on board was his sister Margaret. Married Jane Williams in 1867 at Macleay River NSW ref 2260/1867. Died July 1925 - see obituary below
Margaret Connell baptised July 1841 Caherconlish, sponsors John Connell and Catherine Connell. In 1864 she is one of the witnesses when William Houlihan marries Alice Dooley. Margaret came to Australia on the St Hilda with brother Patrick and my ancestor William Houlihan. According to her shipping information Margaret was a servant/house maid from Ballybricken. She was Roman Catholic and could read and write.
Edmund Connell baptised 13th February 1844, Caherconlish, sponsors John Connell and Mary Connell. May have married Margaret Quinn 7th November 1876 at Ballybricken. Edmund of Kilcoolin. Winesses James Brien and Anne Graham married
Patrick Connell baptised 2nd March 1846, Caherconlish, sponsors ? Hartigan and ? Hartigan Patrick Connell of Stonepark, son of Patrick, married Catherine Connell daughter of Jeremiah Connell, both of Ballybricken, on 8th February 1869 at Ballybricken. Witnesses were Dennis Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Ryan. Catherine was baptised 19th November 1845 at Manister, daughter of Jeremiah Connell and Bridget McGrath. Sponsors Patrick McNamara and maria Reidy.
Mary Connell baptised 9th May 1852, father a labourer. Sponsors James Connell and Catherine Connell. Mary Connell aged 23, servant of Ballybricken and daughter of Patrick Connell deceased married Patrick Shaunessy aged 25 labourer of Ballybricken, son of James Shaunessy labourer on 29th February 1876 at Ballybricken. Witnesses Michael Ryan and Margaret Nolan

Griffiths Land Valuations:
Patrick Connell at High Park Caherconlish renting house and land consisting of 17 acres of land from Joseph Gabbett. William Connell is also renting 19 acres from the same man. High Park was an estate owned by the Gabbett family. It was a three-storied house was built between 1759 and 1789. It is also the address given by my ancestor Alice Dooley when she married William Houlihan in 1864.
