Christopher Norton Wright was born according to his autobiography on 6th March 1790 son
of Henry Wright and Carey Rose Norton. at Fasley [Fazeley] Staffordshire. I have been
unable to find a record of his Baptism, however several of his siblings are baptised at
Tamworth Staffordshire, with parents shown as Henry and Caroline/Carey. The FHS
Ancestral File has an entry for Christopher showing birth 15 Jan 1789, White Lion, Fazeley,
Staffordshire, England and Christening on 24 May 1789 Knowle, Warwickshire, England. The
White Lion was a Hotel owned by his father Henry Wright.
Christopher was a stationer, printer and bookseller. He was married four times.
According to "Transcript of memory album, started in 1829 by Mary Anne Wright (nee
Brettell) 1795-1837, third wife of Christoprer (sic) Norton Wright (1789-1875) and
continued after her death by Christopher Norton Wright, 1795-1968" Christopher
Norton Wright who was born in England on January 15, 1789. On November 16, 1813, he
married first Mary Ann Young (1784-1813). They had no children. On December 5, 1814 he
married second Diana Holme (1789-1823). They had no children. On June 1, 1824, he
married third Mary Ann Brettell (1795-1837). They had five children. On February 12, 1839,
he married Anne Cooke (1803-1872). They had no children. Christopher Norton Wright died
on August 14, 1875 in Nottingham, England
First Marriage: Mary Ann Young on 16th November 1813. Christopher's memoirs name her
Sophia Young. According to his book Sophia died of acute appendicitis on their wedding
night. There is a submitted entry on the IGI and the Ancestral file that states Christopher
married Mary Ann Young on 16 Nov 1813 at St Peters, Nottingham. England. Mary Ann
aged 29 died and was buried on 22nd November 1813 at St Stephen Sneinton, Nottingham.
Second Marriage: Diana Holme/s on 5th December 1814 at St George Tombold, Norwich,
Norfolk, England. Christopher was a widower, Diana a widow [sighted] Witnesses were
Edward Ball and Eliz [sic] ??College?? According to his memoirs, Diana, aged 18 was a
widow, having previously married Richard Holme when she was 16. Diana Holmes was
Diana(h) nee Ball baptised 30th November 1789, daughter of Nathan Ball and Diana Fitt[z]
She had married Richard Holme in 1811 when she was 22. According to his autobiography,
Christopher and Diana had one daughter Mary Ann Wright born about 1815 on the
anniversary of his first wife's death. Mary Ann died of scarlet fever when she was five.
Diana died three months later, never recovering fully from a miscarriage she suffered after
Mary Ann's death. I have found no records to confirm this. Diana was buried at St Stephen
Sneinton on 11 May 1823, Nottingham, England.[FMP] Sneinton St Stephen was a chapelry
within Nottingham St Mary the Virgin. The Stamford mercury dated 23rd May 1823 reports:
Deaths: On Sunday 11th instant, aged 34, Mrs Wright, wife of Mr C N Wright, bookseller,
Third Marriage: Mary Ann Brettell on 1st June 1824 at Aston, Warwickshire. Their children
Mary Ann Brettell/ Brettale Wright born 11th March 1825 She was baptised twice; firstly
on 20th March 1825 at St Marys, Nottingham, Nottingham, [father a stationer of Long Row]
FMP and secondly on 9th November 1829 at Friar Lane Chapel, Nottingham, Nottingham,
England. Died before 1853 when sister Eliza marries as she s called the 'only daughter'. Not
mentioned in Christopher's book. A possible death is Mary Ann Wright aged 17 buried at St
Stephen Sneinton 18th May 1842.
Christopher Norton Wright born 7th August 1827 according to his father's autobiography.
The IGI states he was born 27th October 1826. Baptised at St Mary's Nottingham on 12th
November 1826 [father a stationer of Long Row] FMP. A second baptism was conducted at
Friar Lane Chapel on 9th November 1829 with his brothers and sisters. Married Frances
Upton Sept q 1851. Died June Q 1907
Walter Wright: Walter is listed as the second oldest by his father in his autobiography
however I have been unable to find any further details. Henry is called the second son in his
Caroline Rose Wright born 22nd November 1828 baptised firstly on 14th December 1828 at
St Mary, Nottingham [father a stationer of Long Row] and again on 9th November 1829 at
Friar Lane Chapel Nottingham. Died 29th November 1831 aged 3, buried St Stephen,
Sneinton. Not mentioned in Christopher's book.
Henry Norton Wright born 19th June 1831. Baptised firstly on 12th July 1831 at St Mary
Nottingham [father a stationer of Long Row] and again at Friar Lane 29th November 1831 as
Henry 'Henton' Wright in Nottingham. Married Sophia Elizabeth Fussell at St Pancras,
London 11th January 1854. Henry was a clergyman of the Church of England. Henry died in
1898 at Yorkshire. His obituary states he is the second son of C N Wright. A coroners report
states Henry was found on the rocks at the bottom of Scarborough Castle Hill. His health had
broken down through overwork and mentally he was in a very weak state. He had to be
watched to ensure he did not harm himself. Despite this the jury found his death was the
result of an accident.
Eliza Paget Wright born about 1830 according to Christopher. Census records suggest she
was born about 1833 in Nottingham although I have found no baptism for her. Married
Thomas Hibell Medlicott Dec Q 1853 although her father claims it was before 1851. He also
says she married on her birthday. Her marriage announcement in the Derby Mercury states
she is the only daughter of C.N Wright
Friar Lane Chapel baptisms: Mary Ann, Christopher and Caroline were all baptised for a
second time on 9th November 1829 at Friar Lane Chapel. Henry was baptised on 29th
November 1831. The Friary Lane chapel was a Congregational chapel.
Death of Mary Ann: Mary Ann died about October 1831 according to Christopher. However
her death must have been after Eliza's birth in 1833. Mary Ann Wright aged 42 buried St
Stephen Sneinton on 7th February 1837.
Fourth Marriage: Anne Cooke on 12th February 1839 at Tamworth Staffordshire. According
to the Coventry Herald dated 22nd February, Anne, of Fazele, was daughter of the late Mr
Marke Cooke of Baddesley Ensor, Warwickshire. You might like to contact Kevin if you are

1840: The Nottingham Annual Register records Christopher as residing at Long Row East
and being an auctioneer, bookseller, insurance agent for 'Protector' and a printer, bookseller
1841 Census: Christopher [a printer] and Ann are residing at Long Row St Mary's
Nottinghmashire with Mary aged 16, Christopher aged 14, Henry aged 9 and Eliza aged 8.
1851 Census: Christopher [a bookseller] and Ann are residing at Long Row, St Mary's
Nottinghamshire with son Christopher [reporter for the press], Henry [booksellers assistant]
and daughter Eliza [at home]
1861 Census: Christopher [an auctioneer] and Ann are residing at Addison Street, St Mary's
1871 Census: Christopher aged 82, a retired bookseller and Ann are residing at 50 Addison
Street, St Mary's
Christopher Norton Wright died 14th August 1875 aged 86 at his residence in Nottingham
Christopher Norton Wright was uncle by marriage of my ancestor Henry Watkinson
Christopher Norton Wright wrote his autobiography "No Hero, I Confess" which was edited after his death by
his Great Grandaughter Margaret P Medlicott. The information contained in this book appears to be a
combination of fact and fiction. Below I have included Christopher's writings along with information
collected from other sources such as the IGI and parish records.
