- of Morpeth  NSW -
Pierce Butler baptised 27th February 1827 at Ballingarry Tipperary, son of Matthew Butler

. Sponors ? Poor? and Mary Donnell. He is the brother of Ellen Butler
who married
Daniel Maher.

Immigration to Australia:  No record of immigration can be found under the name Pierce
Butler but after much research I think I have solved the mystery.
This is my theory:
In 1841 the Grant family arrived in NSW aboard the Jane Gifford. The family consisted on
James aged 38 of Moyaliffe Tipperary, son of John Grant and Johanna Maher, his wife
Margaret nee Dwyer aged 36 also of Moyaliffe, daughter of Pierce Dwyer and Ann [Anastasia]
Mockler and children Ellen aged 17, Pierce aged 14 and James aged 13. Also on board were
four of Margaret nee Dwyer's siblings, Patrick, John, Catherine and Johanna. I could find no
records in Ireland for the marriage of James Grant to Margaret Dwyer, nor could I find any
record of Baptisms for the three children.  However,  there is a marriage in NSW the same
year as their arrival for James Grant and Margaret Butler. I believe the woman named
Margaret Grant nee Dwyer is the widow of Matthew Butler and the children, Ellen, Pierce and
James are the Butler children using the grant name. James Grant and Margaret Butler, nee
Dwyer married once they arrived in Sydney. When Ellen Butler married Daniel Maher in
1845 the witnesses are James Grant and Margaret Grant.
Comments are welcome
