Anson Bartlett and Isabella Estabrook
My Great x 3 Grandparents

Anson Bartlett was born 18 September, 1796 in  Auburn, Worcester,
Massachusetts to
John Bartlett and Eunice Nicholls [b] Anson's known occupations
were farmer, scythe maker and hotelier.

First Marriage: on 27th May, 1819, in Millbury, Massachusetts, Anson married Releaf
[Relief, Leafa] Marble
, born 14th April 1801 at Sutton Worcester, daughter of Solomon
Marble and Jerusha Greenwood

Identified children were: still researching:

John F Bartlett born about August 1820, Massachusetts. Married three times.

Esther Waters Bartlett, born 7th April 1823, Auburn, Worcester. MA. Esther married
Cyrus  H Wood on 21st January, 1846 in Wayne, Kennebee County, Maine


Death: Releaf died on 11th September 1826 and is buried in West Millbury Cemetery,
Mass.

Second Marriage: Anson and  Isabella were married on 8th September 1827 at Paxton
Worcester. Isabella is shown as a resident of Paxton and Anson is shown as coming from
Ward [Ward is the old name for Auburn].

Isabella Kelly Estabrook [Eastabrook] was born 16th May 1804 to parents
Jonah
Estabrook and Elizabeth Buckminster Foster in Paxton, Worcester, MA. Birth
record shows her name as Isabel Kelly. Isabella was  the sister of Anson's brother
Joshua's wives Mary and Eliza Estabrook.

Their children were:

Daniel Estabrook Bartlett, born 10th August 1828, Auburn, Worc. Mass. [b] Married
Harriet B Watson, 16th September 1851, in Civil, New Sharon, Franklin, Maine.[b]

Ellen Tryphosa Bartlett, born October 1829, Auburn.[b] Married William V Barclay.

Isabella Eliza Bartlett, born 31st May 1831, Auburn [b] Married Joseph H Gee 14th
April, 1849, Kennebec, Maine.

Anson Hammond Bartlett, born approx 1834 Smithfield, Providence, Rhode Island [a] I
have been unable to locate a birth entry for Anson. The State of Rhode Island did not
require birth, marriage and death records to be recorded until 1853. Therefore, many
vital records were not recorded before that time. Appears as Hammond F in the 1850
census.

Mary C Bartlett  born Rhode Island about 1835. Married Joseph U Walton 10th June
1858, Fayette, Kenebec Maine.

Marcus Morton Bartlett, born 1840, Rhode Island [d] [married Eliza M Benson 30th
September 1861, Kennebec, Maine

Frederick F. Bartlett, born 1841-1843, Massachusetts   Married Eunice [possibly
Stewart married 10th March 1868 at Sandusky Ohio].  

George Nelson Bartlett, born 1845, Massachusetts [d] Marriage in Oshowa Ontario on
27th March 1867 to
Christine Grant.

Census:

1820:
Possibly in Dudley MA.  Males 1 16-26 [Anson], Female 1 16-26 [Releaf]. One
person was engaged in manufacture.

1830 Census: Ward [later Auburn in 1837] in Worcester County MA. Males - 1 under 5
[Daniel] 1 5-10 [John F], 1 30-40 [Anson]. Females - 1 under 5 [Ellen], 1 5-10 [Esther],
1 20-30 [Isabella]

1840 Census: Anson is residing at Smithfield Rhode island. Names are not recorded
but the breakdown of ages in the family is as follows: Males -1 under 5 [Marcus], 1 5-10
[Anson H], 1 10-15 [Daniel], 1  15-20 [John F],  1 40-50 [Anson]. Females - 1 under 5
[Mary E], 1 5-10 [Isabella], 1 10-15[Ellen], 1 15-20 [Esther], 1 30-40 [Isabella]

1850 Census: At the time of the 1850 census, Anson, a scythe maker and Isabella were
living in Wayne, Kennebec, Main with 'Hammond F' aged 15 [probably Anson
Hammond], Marcus M aged 10, Frederick F aged 7, George N aged 5, Cyrus Wood aged
27, a scythe maker, Esther W aged 27 [Esther nee Bartlett], Helen M aged .3

1860 Census: Wayne Kennebec Maine. Anson  and Isabella with sons Marcus 20,
Frederick F 19, all scythe makers and George N 16- farm labourer.

1870 Census: Anson aged 74 and Isabella aged 62 are residing in Wayne Kennebec,
Maine with son Frederick F, his wife Eunice and son Herbert. Grandson Charles W
Walton [recorded as Bartlett] is also residing. Anson is a farmer.

An 1898 publication,
'History of the Town of Wayne, Kennebec County, Maine: from
its settlement to 1898'
[f] states that in 1843 Anson Bartlett first opened a Hotel at
North Wayne Village in a building owned by Esq. Fisk. The publication goes on to say
that little is known of Mr Bartlett's history but that his former occupation was scythe
maker and he had worked for several years in the Dunn Edge Tool Co. He had a family
of four or more children and that one, M.M Bartlett [Marcus M] was superintendent of
the North Wayne Tool Co for several years.  It adds that Mr Bartlett senior [Anson]
subsequently purchased a farm at which place he died.

Death: Anson died 28th January 1879 [exact date unconfirmed but year correct as per
headstone below]


1880 census, Isabella, now widowed, was living in Winchester, Lichfield, Connecticut
with her daughter Ellen Barclay and her family.

1885 Winsted City Directory records Isabella C Bartlett widow of Anson as bds
[boards] 12 Holabird Ave.

1890 Winsted City Directory records Isabella C Bartlett rem[removed] to Maine. This
was probably
to live with daughter Ellen Barclay

Death: Isabella died in 1889 as per her headstone in North Wayne cemetery Wayne,
Kennebec Maine - see below.
